Project Overview

Conservation at the Centre of Island 72's Future

RT Project 72 is a planned RESTECT TERRA conservation initiative focused on the long-term protection, restoration and stewardship of Island 72 and its natural environment. The project is intended to place conservation and ecological stewardship at the centre of the island's long-term future.

The core objective is to protect the natural character and ecological value of the island while establishing the infrastructure and stewardship capability necessary for responsible long-term conservation.

RT Project 72 is a Next Stage project. It will advance once RESTECT TERRA's foundational projects are funded and the organizational and operational capacity to responsibly manage a conservation initiative of this scale is in place.

Why Island Conservation Matters

Islands as Conservation Priorities

Islands represent some of the most ecologically distinct environments on Earth. Their relative isolation can support unique ecological communities, provide undisturbed habitat for wildlife, and preserve natural landscapes that have been significantly altered elsewhere.

Island ecosystems can also be among the most vulnerable. Development pressure, invasive species, shoreline alteration and unmanaged access can degrade ecological values quickly and in ways that are difficult to reverse.

Long-term conservation of an island requires more than acquisition — it requires active stewardship, ecological management, monitoring and the organizational capacity to fulfil those responsibilities over time. RT Project 72 is designed with that commitment at its foundation.

Conservation Vision

A Conservation-First Future for Island 72

The vision for RT Project 72 is an island whose natural character is protected, whose ecological values are actively stewarded, and whose long-term future is defined by conservation rather than development.

This means protecting existing habitat, restoring areas where ecological values have been diminished, managing the island responsibly over the long term, and ensuring that any use of the island is compatible with its conservation purpose.

RT Project 72 is intended to demonstrate that significant natural properties can be protected and stewarded responsibly — and that conservation can be the defining purpose of a place, not an afterthought.

Planned Stewardship

What Long-Term Stewardship of Island 72 Is Intended to Include

Land and habitat protection

Establishing and maintaining conservation protections to ensure the island's natural character and ecological values are preserved in perpetuity.

Ecological restoration

Restoring areas where natural values have been diminished — native vegetation, habitat rehabilitation, invasive species management and ecological recovery support.

Environmental monitoring

Ongoing monitoring of ecological conditions, biodiversity, shoreline health and environmental quality to inform stewardship decisions.

Responsible access and site management

Managing access to the island in a manner consistent with its conservation purpose — protecting sensitive areas while allowing appropriate stewardship activities.

Site safety and protection

Maintaining the safety and security of the island and its natural environment, including protection from unauthorized access and activities incompatible with conservation.

Conservation infrastructure

Establishing the infrastructure necessary to support conservation and stewardship operations — including access, communications and operational support.

Protecting the Island Long Term

A Permanent Conservation Commitment

Long-term protection of Island 72 requires more than a single act of acquisition or designation. It requires sustained organizational commitment, ongoing stewardship resources, ecological management capability and the governance structures to ensure that conservation remains the island's defining purpose across time.

RT Project 72 is designed to be a permanent conservation commitment — not a time-limited project. The stewardship obligations it creates are intended to be fulfilled indefinitely, supported by RESTECT TERRA's broader organizational and financial capacity, including the Conservation Endowment.
